Halloween Treat Coffins and a Tutorial

I have been having fun playing with the Fa-BOO-lous Collection from Close To My Heart recently and came up with this coffin-shaped box for giving some Halloween Treats to my family and friends. The box uses patterned paper from the collection along with 1 sheet of cardstock and can be filled with some sweet treats for the holiday.

I am including a link to a downloadable PDF of instructions for this treat box as well as a process video for it at the end of this blog post.  The PDF contains a diagram for cutting the sheet of cardstock into the pieces you will need to create the coffin base and lid.

Cut the patterned paper into 1 3" x 5 1/2" rectangle and 2 12" x 1/2" strips.

Cut the cardstock into 4 3" x 5 1/2" rectangles, 2 4 1/8" x 2 1/4" pieces, 2 2 5/8" x 2 1/4" pieces, 1 2 1/2" x 2 1/4" piece, 1 2" x 2 1/4" piece, 2 4 1/8" x 1 1/4" pieces, 2 2 5/8" x 1 1/4" pieces, 1 2 1/2" x 1 1/4" piece, and 1 2" x 1 1/4" piece.

Make marks along top of rectangles at 1/2" and 2 1/2", along bottom at 3/4" and 2 1/4" and along sides at 2" down from top. Use trimmer to cut away between the marks to create the coffin shape.

Score each side piece at 1/2" along it's length and 1/2" on one side. Make sure to score at the same side for all pieces. Fold along the score lines and cut away the small bottom corner piece from each.

Apply adhesive to bottom and side tabs on each piece as well as along the back of 2 of the coffin-shaped cardstock pieces.

Starting with bottom piece for base (2" x 2 1/4" piece) remove adhesive backing and adhere 1st lower side piece to tab. Continue this by following with 1st upper side, top piece, 2nd upper side piece, and 2nd lower side piece. This will create a long strip as shown.

Starting with bottom piece, remove adhesive backing from tab and adhere to coffin-shaped piece (the one without the additional adhesive). Follow this around the coffin shape adhering each side in turn. At the end tuck the final tab behind the bottom piece.

Remove adhesive from coffin-shaped piece and adhere to inside of base to cover tabs and provide extra stability.

Repeat steps for coffin lid.

Once the coffin is complete, decorate the lid with the patterned paper. Embellish with some fun stamped images from the Fa-BOO-lous Stamp Set and some Melon Dots. Fill with treats and enjoy!
